And just like that the holidays have arrived, and they look more different than ever this year. With winter here and different states gearing up for a second wave of pandemic shutdowns, the 2020 holidays are bringing their own versions of stress that we’re all trying to navigate.

This year has taught us so many lessons on adjusting our day-to-day lives and making things work in ways we never thought we would have to (like with my business, going from selling everyday at Pike Place Market to selling ONLY online!). Now that the holidays are here that same mindset applies, which is why I’ve put together five tips to help you feel more grounded this holiday season.

1. Realize you can’t please everyone, so don’t try to
2. Wear comfy / stretchy clothing that makes you feel good
3. Get your blood flowing a little bit
4. Practice appreciating the small things
5. Think about what you’re buying and where it comes from

1. Realize you can't please everyone, so don't try to
You’re the type of person who wants everyone to be happy, comfortable, and having fun. But the truth is, you can’t please everyone. This mindset is especially important and so in line with the 2020 holiday season. With family members and friends who may not agree with you on safety precautions around the pandemic, it can be tough to figure out how to meet halfway if they’re not respecting your boundaries and comfort levels. Stay true to yourself and your beliefs, because even if people don’t agree with you it’s better to be on the safe side and save lives.

2. Wear comfy / stretchy clothing that makes you feel good
There's really no point in looking 'cute' if you feel like you're being restricted by your clothing. Embrace your body the way it is and wear clothing that not only fits, but that you can move around in. This is so important all of the time, with or without the holidays!
If you’re looking to dress up for your at-home holiday celebrations there’s about a million and one ways to style leggings and yoga pants, so you’re completely set with endless possibilities of cute and comfy looks (just go to Pinterest to find out for yourself!).

3. Get your blood flowing a little bit
Exercise produces endorphins and makes you feel good! It's not really about how your body looks, but all about how you feel. Try taking a nice solo-walk, or turn on the tunes and have a dance party before dinner. Getting moving can change your mood and make you hungry for another slice of pie!

4. Practice appreciating the small things
In a society where there’s so much F.O.M.O and pressure on experiencing the perfect holiday season, it’ll be almost impossible to meet those expectations this year. So take a moment to ground yourself, breathe in and breathe out and look at the things right in front of you. What is it you’re grateful for and appreciate about yourself and those you love? What are some small accomplishments you’ve done today? Take a walk outside and listen to the wind, birds, or silence and experience your small wonderful moment.

5. Think about what you’re buying and where it comes from
Gift giving seems to be one of the few things that the pandemic hasn’t completely affected. We can still shop online and send gifts to our loved ones (and ourselves), without putting others at risk. And this holiday season it’s more important than ever to support small and local businesses for all of your gift-giving needs! While you’re shopping, think about these things:

  • Is this purchase helping a local business that may need some extra help this year?
  • Is this supporting a BIPOC owned business? Women owned business?
  • Will your loved one actually get good use out of this item? Will they appreciate it?
  • Who made it? Do they treat their employees fairly? Is it sustainable and eco-friendly?

I choose to buy all of my gifts from fellow artists because I know that I'm supporting a dream and even better, I know I’ll be getting a quality product that represents my own values.

How will you choose to shop and take care of yourself this holiday season?
